The Devil's Arithmetic

The book, The Devil's Arithmetic, by Jane Yolen has 170 pages. It is about a girl named Hannah and she is attending her family's Seder. When she is chosen to open the door for the prophet Elijah, it is like she is transported back in time to 1941, the time of the Holocaust. She is living in a village with some people named Gilt and Shmuel. They are at Shmuel's wedding when suddenly the Nazi come and take them away. Soon, Hannah finds out how life was for her Aunt Eva and Grandpa Will in the concentration camps. An important setting to the book is that concentration camp.

The concentration camp was an important setting to the book. Many things would be different without this setting. One thing is that Grandpa Will and Aunt Eva wouldn't have the numbers written on their arms. Also they wouldn't have memories of what awful things that happened in the concentration camps. Hannah wouldn't of have known what it was like in the concentration camps either. Finally, tons of Jews that were in the concentration camps wouldn't have been killed. That is why the concentration camp is an important setting to the book.

Skeleton Key

The book Skeleton Key*, Alex's third adventure, is by Anthiny Horowitz and has 327 pages. Alex Rider and two CIA agents go to Cayo Esqueleto (Skeleton Key) to find a man with a nuclear bomb. Soon the American agents are killed from a trap and Alex is on his own. When Alex gets caught by Sarov who has the bomb, he wants him to be the son he lost. Sarov tells him what he is using the bomb for. An important setting to the book is Casa De Oro.

An important setting to the book is Casa De Oro. If this setting wasn't in the book, many things would be different. One thing is that the two CIA agents wouldn't have died. The CIA agents were looking for the "devils chimney" so they could sneak up on the island but there was a trap. Also, the agents would have never known where Sarov was located and where he had the bomb. Finally, Alex wouldn't have almost been killed by the crusher. That is why Casa De Oro is an important setting to the story. This would be a good book for any reader to read. But make sure to read the other books before it first.

Boy of the Painted Cave

The book, Boy of the Painted Cave*, is a 158 page book by Justin Denzil about a boy named Tao. He is the age of 14 and has a bad foot. He meets many people such as Greybeard and Ram (an animal). He always wanted to be a cave painter but he can't because he wasn't a chosen one or born of a leader. This is solved when Tao becomes shaman because Greybeard passed the privilege to him before he died. Because of this, Tao is allowed to paint in the secret cave.

A setting that is important to the story would have to be the slough. If they didn't have the slough as a setting, Tao wouldn't of been able to go back to his clan. This is because when he first hunted in the slough, he caught a rabbit. Volt told Tao he could not come back until he caught the rabbit. Also, he wouldn't of met Greybeard if he didn't go into the slough. he was watching the Giant Deer and Greybeard happened to see Tao. This is why the slough is an important setting to the story.

Ark Angel

The book Ark Angel* by Anthony Horowitz is a 323 page book about Alex Rider and adventure he has. The main characters are Alex Rider, Paul Drevin, Nikolai Drevin, and Force Three (a group). A big problem in the story is when Nikolai Drevin tries to blow up his space hotel and make it fall on Washington D.C. that will destroy all his criminal evidence in the pentagon. This is solved when Alex goes into space and moves the bomb (putting it in a toliet). An important setting to the story would have to be Flamingo Bay.
Flamingo Bay is a very important setting to the book. If they didn't have Flamingo Bay in the story, many things would be different. One thing that would be different is that Nikolai Drevin wouldn't be able to launch the rockets that took supplies to the building site of Ark Angel. Also, Alex wouldn't of almost drowned. During World War 2, a ship sank and Alex and a worker for Nikolai Drevin named Kolo trapped Alex in the sunken ship. The last thing that would be different is that Alex wouldn't of known how to windsurf. If ever needed to read a book, I would recommend this one.
